The Internet has changed many things about mortgage broker marketing. For one thing, it gives mortgage companies a whole new marketing channel with endless reach. But many mortgage marketers don’t fully understand how to use the Internet to its fullest potential.
The key to mortgage company marketing online is to be highly active online. Sure, you want to have a great website to support your online marketing efforts, but there are also plenty of other ways to “spread yourself” over the Internet.
When you are active online, you are easier to find online. This online visibility is the first step to Internet marketing success. On the other hand, inactivity can lead to invisibility. So be active to be visible.
Ways to Be Active Online
- Publish press releases online through services like PRWeb.com
- Publish mortgage articles online through services like EzineArticles.com
- Submit mortgage articles to niche websites like Home Buying Institute
- Blog on a regular basis
- Participate in forums, and link to your website from your forum signature
Think of each action you take online as an investment in mortgage company marketing success. The more investments you make, the more visible you’ll be to your target audience. Thus, the more successful you’ll be in your online marketing.

The first step to generating mortgage leads online is to be visible online. After all, if people can’t find your mortgage website or blog, they obviously can’t respond to it. Remember these two “formulas”…
- Online visibility = website traffic
- Web traffic + lead generation = mortgage leads
People cannot contact you if they don’t know you exist. So you must strive to make your business visible, online and off. Internet visibility is a big part of this, which leads us to the popular topic of search engine optimization. After all, the more visible you are online, the more likely people will be to find you.
But there are other ways to increase your visibility as well. You can publish articles in your local newspaper, syndicate articles and press releases online, be active in your community, conduct free seminars, and many other aspects of PR. Visibility and awareness are the first steps to generating mortgage leads.

Looking for ideas on how to increase your website traffic? Why not create a resource section?
Any website can benefit from having a “Resources” section. Mortgage websites, banking websites … basket-weaving websites. You name it!
By adding quality content, articles, tips, resources or tools to your website, you will improve your online mortgage marketing program in three major ways:
- You will make your mortgage website more visible to search engines, because everyone knows that search engines love content. Also, by developing website content around your key search phrases, you’ll improve your search engine ranking for those phrases.
- You will also position yourself as an authority in your mortgage subject area. Everyone knows you must understand a topic well to write about it well. So by creating a mortgage resource section, you’ll demonstrate your mortgage expertise.
- By adding useful content to your mortgage website, you will keep people on the website longer. And it’s only logical that the longer people stay on your website, the better chance you’ll have of getting a response or capturing a lead.

If you are intimately familiar with your website like I am with mine, then you may be blind to various weaknesses your website has. It’s only natural. When you see something on a daily basis, you begin to not see it at all. The invisibility of familiarity.
So what does this have to do with online mortgage marketing? Everything. From a marketing perspective, we all have flaws with our websites. That’s okay, as long as you can figure out a way to identify and fix those flaws. But identifying them is the hard part!
Internet Marketing Exercise
Here’s a simple exercise to help you “step outside” of yourself and view your mortgage marketing website with fresh eyes. Pretend for a moment that your mortgage website belongs to a stranger. Now pretend you are being paid to evaluate the website as honestly as possible. Now print out the following questions and visit the home page of your mortgage website:
- Within the first ten seconds, do you see anything of value to you?
- Is the navigation logical? Can you immediately find your way around?
- Do you see anything worth digging deeper for?
- Does the website suggest professionalism and attention to detail?
- Does this website give you confidence in the owner?
- Does the website make you want to learn more? Why or why not?
I hope this exercise helps you find areas of your mortgage website you might improve upon. Once you’ve done it with your home page, you should visit your other important pages and ask the same questions.
Better yet, ask a friend to do it for you … somebody known for their brutal honesty!
